Marcel Duchamp "Fountain"

This piece of art is very untraditional compared to the previous art work displayed in galleries in the early part of the 20th century. Some people may over analyze the piece; in class today we learned that some observe the renamed urinal as a representation of the Virgin Mary and the artist signature R. Mutt can be linked to the German word for mother. I interpret the piece as a way of poking fun at the art critics of the time. It shows that anything can be art. And something as simple as a toilet can be displayed in a new way and it can transcend the boundaries of the more common concept that is associated with the object. It is all about the vision that the artist had and the way the public responds to it
