The art we looked at today by Michael Craig- Martin was very strange to me. I understand his motives behind creating the art but I do not find cartoon-like drawings no matter where they are placed or how. I enjoy color splatters such as this. There is no real form to them but the result is beautiful

Vija Celmins

These were created by Vija Celmins. For inspiration, she taps into childhood memories, drawing things from when she was a little girl. She also recreates photographs. I think her work is beautiful. She looks for inspiration from unusual places, which is what I like about her artwork. However, in my opinion, her work gives off a feeling of sadness. I think it gives the viewer a sense of isolation and lonliness.

A darker side

Today we learned about painter Alison Watt, she is mostly known for her paintings of white fabric. This painting exudes her darker side and is called "Dark Light". The painting still catches light throughout the folds and wrappings of the fabric but I find this painting more majestic and it has a deeper feel to the way the light hits the fabric. The fabrric resembles black silk; it almost feels as if you can touch it and you are enveloped in the soft fibers.

Clown Torture

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YorcQscxV5Y

This link is Bruce Naumans 'Clown Torture'. The video shows different clowns in each scene on small monitors, with a few repeating themselves over and over. To me, this "art" was quite disturbing and I could not relate to the clowns. It seems that each clown is full of anxiety and the video gives me a feeling of nervousness. Although I can imagine many people not enjoying Naumans 'Clown Torture', the artist certainly gets everyones attention.

A new look at everyday life

I like John Baldessari's work.  It brings fun and interest to every day images and I like the way that the simple photographs look against the contrast of the bright colors he uses in the collage or against the contrast of another picture. It catches the eye and makes you think.

Marcel Duchamp "Fountain"

This piece of art is very untraditional compared to the previous art work displayed in galleries in the early part of the 20th century. Some people may over analyze the piece; in class today we learned that some observe the renamed urinal as a representation of the Virgin Mary and the artist signature R. Mutt can be linked to the German word for mother. I interpret the piece as a way of poking fun at the art critics of the time. It shows that anything can be art. And something as simple as a toilet can be displayed in a new way and it can transcend the boundaries of the more common concept that is associated with the object. It is all about the vision that the artist had and the way the public responds to it
